Nearly 100 Madison County residents packed the state health department Thursday morning.
They all agree county residents need to have more access to better health care, but who provides is where they differ.
Madison River Oaks Hospital is under construction in Canton. However, St. Dominic's wants to construct a facility in Madison.
The health department conducts the hearings, which are referred to as certificate of need hearings. Thursday's hearing was the public forum.
Supporters of the Madison River Oaks Hospital, which is being built off the Nissan Parkway in Canton, say the county does not need another hospital. If St. Dominic's comes to the county, it may take away patients that may would go to Madison River Oaks.
St. Dominic's supporters say the county is growing so fast that the 67-bed River Oaks Hospital is not enough. More accessibility to health care would benefit all residents.
The comments have to be transcribed and then presented to the state health officer, who will decide if St. Dominic's will get the approval to build a hospital.
Either side could appeal the state health officer's decision.
