Madison River Oaks Medical Center Named Hospital of the Year

MADISON, MISSISSIPPI (by Renee Cotton, March 23, 2012) - Madison River Oaks Medical Center was named “Hospital of the Year” (100 beds or fewer) at the 11th Annual Nightingale Awards held March 5 in Jackson. This is the hospital’s first major recognition since opening in May 2011.   The annual Nightingale Awards are sponsored by the Mississippi Nurses Association. Awards are given to individuals and facilities who have exhibited quality service, commitment, and excellence related to the field of nursing in the State of Mississippi.

“We value this prestigious award and consider it meaningful validation of the extensive efforts we made before and since our hospital’s opening to staff our hospital with excellent nurses and provide quality healthcare with a full range of services for our patients,” said Madison River Oaks Medical Center President and CEO, Glenn Silverman.  “Since our peers in the healthcare community are familiar with the challenges faced by all healthcare providers, it is humbling to receive this award in recognition of our efforts to operate a hospital that is attracting the best associates, nurses, physicians and most important, is the hospital of choice for a growing number of patients.”

The Hospital of the Year Nightingale Award was presented to Madison River Oaks Medical Center based on a set of criteria which were judged by a panel of judges representing other states’ nurses associations. The criteria included recognition of RNs from within the organization, RN participation in decision-making and management decisions, community support for the organization and innovation in leadership and management within the organization.

The participation of Madison River Oaks’ nurses’ participation in the decision making process through its Nursing Leadership Council; a strong culture of advanced learning for all employees practiced by the hospital’s parent company, Health Management Associates; serving as a training site for Holmes Community College’s nursing program; and keeping nursing turnover to an uncharacteristically-low two percent were a few of the factors that impressed judges.

Since its opening, Madison River Oaks has filled a growing need for convenient, accessible healthcare services in the Jackson Metropolitan Area, Silverman said. Through the opening of the hospital in 2011, services such as a 24/7 Emergency Department and ER Extra, several state-of-the-art Operating Suites; Labor, Delivery and Recovery Suites; and an eight-bed Intensive Care Unit are now available in the heart of Madison County.  This $42 million investment in Madison County created over 100 new jobs, including 65 in the nursing field, Silverman added. Madison River Oaks is located at 161 River Oaks Dr., just off Interstate 55 North. To reach the hospital from 1-55, take exit 118 (Nissan Parkway) and travel west. Madison River Oaks Medical Center is approximately one-quarter of a mile on the left. For more information about this topic or Madison River Oaks, call Renee Cotton at (601) 855-4000.
